Last year the Foundation created a new award to honor the generous philanthropy of Rob and Lola Salazar, who over many years contributed over $1,000,000 to Jeffco Schools Foundation to support our endowment and literacy efforts including intervention training for teachers across the District, as well as provision of laptops, software, books and learning materials, and many projects d to close achievement gaps in reading throughout Jeffco Public Schools. Both of their children attended Jeffco schools and are now successful entrepreneurs. The Salazars continue to support educational efforts in the City and County of Denver.

Excellence in Philanthropy Award
Salazar Family Foundation
By underwriting the costs of major initiatives, the Salazar Family Foundation helped Jeffco Schools Foundation support projects such as Lights On After School programming, the Salazar Literacy Mini-Grants Program, Colorado Reading Corps tutors, and the Jeffco Summer of Early Literacy (JSEL) Initiative. Initially supporting four high poverty K-3 schools, gains in reading proficiency through JSEL expanded the program to six schools and grades 4-6 in its third year. This early support by the Salazar Family Foundation helped leverage additional matching funding and JSEL graduated from the national Social Innovation Fund (SIF) Program and will be highlighted as part of its Knowledge Initiative. This year the JSEL program will expand again to serve 30 Jeffco schools and almost 2,000 student.
The Salazar Family Foundation has allowed Jeffco Schools Foundation to focus programming on projects that address the academic challenges resulting from increases in student poverty and homelessness in Jefferson County.
