Jeffco Summer of Early Literacy (JSEL) completes its third year of a five-year pilot project that is gaining national recognition as one of the most effective programs that prevent summer reading loss among low-income K-6 students. Six Jeffco elementary schools participated in JSEL in 2014.

As families of Jeffco Public Schools 85,000 students enjoy their summers, your Jeffco Schools Foundation has an opportunity to review the year’s successes and to renew a commitment to our core mission. Jeffco Schools Foundation, formerly The Jefferson Foundation, was established by Jeffco community and business leaders to support our schools and “improve the quality of public education in Jeffco Public Schools and throughout America.”
Through the past year, we have undergone rebranding to reflect our mission to Jeffco Public Schools. We have pursued projects or “Big ideas” that provide our students with continued “Bright futures.” We have also said farewell to our executive director, Katie Tiernan. We appreciated her hard work. We look forward to introducing you to our incoming executive director when that person is hired in the fall. Meanwhile, our work continues. Here are just a few of our major program highlights:
· Jeffco Summer of Early Literacy (JSEL) is in its 3rd year at six low-income elementary schools. For the past two summers, JSEL has provided intensive reading instruction for struggling readers in grades K – 3. JSEL’s expansion this year will allow teachers at two of our sites to provide support for intermediate students as well. JSEL is getting state-wide attention as a premier tool to combat summer literacy loss among these students. The strength of this program is that it enables struggling readers to become proficient at grade level.
· Colorado Reading Corps (CRC) was first piloted by Jeffco Schools Foundation in 2012. Pairing Americorps volunteers with struggling readers, the program provides one-on-one tutoring and has increased reading benchmarks in 80% of the students. The CRC program will continue at 10 Jeffco elementary schools in the fall.
· Families have access to new early childhood programs and additional human services supports through the Parent-Child Home Program Jeffco. This evidence-based and research-validated program was first introduced by Jeffco Schools Foundation this past year and saw its first graduating class of 27 families in May. Next year PCHP Jeffco will expand to serve 50 low-income families with pre-school children.
· Once again, Salazar Literacy Initiative Grants were made available to all Jeffco schools. Funding was awarded to 13 sites.

Information about our upcoming Hero Awards on November 12, 2014 will be sent at the start of the new school year, including a call for nominations. We will be recognizing high school seniors and school employees with scholarships, prizes and more at the event.
We are grateful for your support.
